Von Lossow Blazes to Victory at Rosauers Open Invitational
By: Cameron Altmayer, PNW PGA Tournament Intern
The 37th annual Rosauers Open Invitational took place at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, WA on July 19-21, 2024. A full field of 168 professionals and amateurs faced roaring temperatures in the high 90s, peaking at 107 degrees. In the end, Andrew Von Lossow, an amateur from The Creek at Qualchan, emerged victorious, winning by one stroke.
The tournament began the morning of July 19, with temperatures climbing throughout the day. While temperatures were high, the scores for the first day were low. Two amateurs, Andrew Von Lossow and Dean Dalton, each fired an opening round of 65 to take a one-shot lead over the field.
The second day showed that the course and the heat were not letting up on the players. The low round of the day belonged to the amateur Cort Benner, with a round of 63. The leaderboard shifted up a bit from the previous day with PGA Professional Russell Grove, and amateurs Dalton Dean and Cort Benner sharing the two-day lead at a score of 132. Von Lossow sat one back off the lead going into the final round.
The morning of the third round brought a wave of anticipation for the round to begin. With the hottest day of the tournament reaching 107 degrees, overcoming the heat and the competition was no easy task. Von Lossow, one group ahead of the leaders, began to heat up his round. With a 4-under front nine, he climbed to first place going into the back 9. With an even par 36 back nine to shoot a 67, Von Lossow clinched his first major win at the Rosauers Open Invitational with a total score of 200 (65-68-67), to outlast PGA Professionals Bryce Fisher and Corey Prugh.
When asked about his victory, Von Lossow said it was his first PNWPGA Major title and a “dream come true.” He expressed gratitude for playing in his hometown event, with support from family and friends, including his father Jim Von Lossow, PGA life member, who caddied for him.
Von Lossow described the pressure of his final putt, a 25-foot downhill shot. Tied for the lead, he focused on his practice and fundamentals, treating it like a putting drill despite the high stakes. “I had confidence but also relief that it was in the bottom of the cup.”
Von Lossow recounted the tense moments waiting to see if he would go into a playoff or win his first PNW Major. “Watching Russ come up the 18th hole... I saw he hit a great drive.” Von Lossow was surprised when Russell Grove’s second shot ended up in the bunker. When Grove didn’t make birdie, Von Lossow realized he had secured a one-shot victory at his hometown event.
Preceding the Rosauers Invitational, the 37th Franz Pro-Am supporting Vanessa Behan took place. The overall winners of the two-day team event were the Reser’s Fine Foods team, led by PGA Professional David Brown with Amateurs Bill Cole, Wade Thrapp, Jeremy Denny, and Greg Irwin, who posted an amazing 237, 51-under. The team that was close on their tail was Mission, led by PGA Professional Scott Erdmann, with a total of 238, 50-under. The real winner was the charity, Vanessa Behan, which received $160,000 from the pro-am this year.
